UKBD TIMES DESK:

The Boishakhi Mela is back for 2018!

Showcasing the best of Bengali music and culture, the hit summer event is set to bring another sizzling line-up to the heart of Banglatown and Brick Lane.

The 2018 Mela will take place in Weavers Fields, on Sunday 1 July from 12pm to 7pm. It is once again being organised by Tower Hamlets Council’s Arts, Parks and Events team. They are busy putting together a packed programme of activities and family entertainment with more details due to be released soon.

As in previous years, there will be opportunities for local organisations to book a stall. Further information about trading opportunities, including how to submit expressions of interest, will be published by mid-March.

Last year’s Mela saw 40,000 people from across Tower Hamlets pass through the gates to enjoy the day.

Notable highlights included a star-studded main stage programme, a parade, the Mela family and arts zone as well as an exciting array of food and crafts on the many stalls.

This year’s event is set to be every bit as successful.

Mayor of Tower Hamlets, John Biggs, said:

“Our diversity is one of our greatest strengths and we are proud of the role the Bangladeshi community plays in making Tower Hamlets such a vibrant and exciting place to live and work.

“The Boishakhi Mela provides us all with a chance to experience the best of Bengali music, art and culture right on our doorstep. It has become a staple of the summer calendar that is not to be missed.

“I’m delighted the council is once again playing its part in delivering a celebration for the whole borough to enjoy.”

Abdul Mukit, Cabinet Member for Culture and Youth, said:

“The Boishakhi Mela is an event we all look forward to each year. Last year 40,000 people packed into Weavers Field to enjoy a great day of entertainment and to experience Bengali culture at its best.

“Gather your friends and family together once again this summer and join us for what I am sure will be another successful event.”
